National Mentoring Movement

Welcome to the official web site of the LOS ANGELES CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT (LACMM)

LACMM is the LA CARES CIRCLE for the NATIONAL CARES MENTORING MOVEMENT (NCMM). The NCMM is an unprecedented outreach initiative that is mobilizing the community to be a mentor to our youth.

The mission of the NCMM  is to create a highly visible and effective national mentoring campaign targeting the African American community. The goal of LACMM is to bring guidance to the lives of LA youth by pairing them with organizations that offer mentoring services and programs in the greater Los Angeles area. The long-term goals of LACMM are to:

  • Increase the pool of African American mentors
  • Increase the high school graduation rate among African American students by 10% yearly
  • Decrease the violence in African American communities in Los Angeles counties

LACMM believes that if we bring awareness to mentorship programs in LA then we can increase high school graduation and college attendance rates which will ultimately lead to the reduction of incarceration, gang violence and teenage pregnancy rates among African American youth.

The call to action is for every able adult to put his or her hand on a vulnerable young person's shoulder and offer support and encouragement. LACMM is committed to connecting individuals to mentoring organizations in the community, as well as connecting organizations to youth. LACMM pledges to be apart of the solution to changing these alarming statistics:

  • 58% of Black fourth-graders are illiterate
  • Every day more than 1,000 Black youths are arrested
  • In some cities, 80% of Black males drop out before graduating high school
  • Nearly 7% of Black babies are born to mothers under the age of 18
  • 1 in every 8 Black males ages 25-29 is incarcerated
  • Homicide is the number one cause of death for Black males
